Florida
Anthropological Society |
• |
This
website suggests ways to get involved with different chapters of the
Florida Anthropological Society throughout the state. A lot of the
contact information and other details need to be updated, but this
is a great place to start with your involvement in local archaeological
efforts: fasweb.org |
Southwest
Florida Archaeological Society |
• |
This website is specifically for the southwest Florida chapter of
the Florida Anthropological Society, of which I am a member and board
member. This group began as one of the very first of its kind in the
state, and it is very active in its involvement in local involvement.
Also, its members are involved in ongoing lab work, as well as those
archaeological field projects that come up in the local area: http://www.explorationsinc.com/swfl-

Fort
Myers - While archaeologists do not study fossils, sometimes
the people interested in archaeology also are interested in learning
more about fossils. This website provides information for people who
may want to attend local meetings for that interest: rockhounds.com/rockshop/clubs/florida |
GAEA
Guides |
• |
This website is for a company that provides guided trips with kayaks
or canoes to see natural and archaeological sites by appointment.
One update that needs to be made here is that this company no longer
takes groups to Josslyn Island, since that island is now owned by
DEP and visitors are not allowed without special permits: gaeaguides.com/ |
Caloosahatchee
River Citizens Association |
• |
This
nonprofit group has a goal of protecting the Caloosahatchee River,
which winds through so much of southwest Florida. Its members are
actively involved in events to raise awareness about the river, and
support educational efforts toward that goal. I have spoken to this
group about archaeology and really was inspired by their ideas and
plans: crca.caloosahatchee.org/ |
The

• |
A social club devoted to researching the history of Spanish influence
in this area, and especially in Punta Gorda; this group also is responsible
for the monument to De Leon in Gilchrist Park and for annual reenactments
